In every nation, even before writing was known, people made up songs for special occasions, such as funerals and religious ceremonies. They also had songs to be
sung at work, like the ones you can still hear when fehermen are drawing in then
ets or crops are being harvested. The stories of famous or terrible happenings we
e also handed down from one generation to another in the form of songs
The songs our ancestors composed were all poetry. There are several reasons wh
y the literature of every nation begins with poetry. For one thing, it is easy to reme
mber. Then, like a song, it has pleasing or interesting sound and, like a dance itha
s strong rhythm. We dance and sing when we are excited. Poetry is specially suita
ble for putting excitement and strong feelings into words.
It is important to remember that we do not read poetry to obtain information. Wer
ead it in order to feel the same sort of pleasure as singing or dancing gives us. Wh
en singing or dancing we pay attention to the rhythm and the tune. In poetry, we w
ill miss much of the pleasure if we do not pay attention to the rhythm tunefulness
of the words. We enjoy it most if we read it aloud and not too fast
