The word "crinoline" comes from the French words crin meaning horsehair and lin meaning linen. The full skirts with crinoline gave an illusion of extra width. In fact, as time progressed, the skirts became wider and appeared fuller. In 1856, metal cage crinoline was marketed in America, France, and Britain. It was the first fashion to be adopted by all classes in England and America. Working women did not care much about the cheap steel bands showing through the ridges of their skirts. Although the cage crinoline was awkward and caused damages to objects when women knocked them as they walked through, these remained popular for a long time. These skirts sometimes spanned over six feet and made walking through the doors challenging. Today, crinolines are usually a part of a formal outfit, such as an evening gown or a wedding dress. Instead of metal, the hoops are made of plastic or nylon. Modern crinolines are much more lightweight and flexible.
