Ponyboy is always trying to discover who he is and where he belongs in his group of friends. Ponyboy is intelligent, sensitive, and connects with Cherry (a Soc); he struggles to be perceived as manly and as a member of the Greaser gang.
Students in school also go through a similar situation of trying to fit in with their peers. Peer-pressure and social norms can cause students conflict and internal struggle.
