Men and women are expected to dress and groom themselves in stereotypical ways. Society has a set of ideas on how men and women should present themselves and behave. It is as if people are assigned a certain personality. Both genders feel the pressure, but women feel they have higher expectations from society than men do.
Are women expected to be perfect? Well, according to Molly H,” Women are judged on the way they look rather than their ability to do something. In Magazines directed towards women, there are 10.5% more articles on how to be thin and lose weight than there are in magazines directed towards men. This could make women feel that their body shape is not good enough, possibly leading to eating disorders or body dissatisfaction. Really this needs to stop, it is harming people all around the world, especially women. However this is not the only problem, women of all ages often feel that they need to focus on other’s emotional and mental needs, putting theirs off until later. This can make women feel as if they are not good enough or that they don’t measure up to the standard that society sets for them. Older teens reported feeling pressure to manage other people’s problems on top of their own, which can give off bad feelings such as sadness and depression. Both teens and women alike, face a lot of societal pressures that can make them feel as though they have to be perfect.
Are men expected to be tough or aggressive by society? Often men feel the societal pressure to not only be tough or aggressive but to be muscular as well. When speaking about men and challenges to their ‘manhood’ Adam Stanaland states “Past research has found that in these threatening instances, some men will go to great-often aggressive-lengths to reassert their manhood”. Society has made these men feel as though they have to fight to be a man. Forty-four percent of older boys feel pressure to be “willing to punch someone if provoked”. Meaning that if they feel anger they should punch someone. “Thirty -five percent of boys say that society most values strength and toughness in boys”. Feeling pressure to have the strength and to be tough can mean, hitting someone if they feel the urge to. They feel that if they don’t fight they will “let people down”. “Now more than ever men are pressured to be the ideal man and body image is obviously attached to that,” said Abe Oloko. Research shows men feel the pressure to be muscular and strong.
In all reality, both men and women face societal pressures. Men feel as though they have to be tough, muscular, and aggressive. While women feel that they have to be skinny, fit, lightweight, and very pretty. “Women are taught to think they should be smaller and imperfections like fat, baggy eyes or gray hair should be eliminated.” Oloko stated, “Back in the day it didn't matter, a man was looked at for what he could do to provide as a man, now it's more about how you look”. At the end of the day, some men will say you never truly feel you are what you are at the level you want to be. Women feel almost the same way, they sometimes use filtered and altered images that can have a dramatic impact on the physical and mental well-being of many men and women more severely adolescent boys and girls.
In conclusion, both genders face tremendous and unnecessary amounts of pressure and it is nearly impossible to decide which gender faces more pressure.
