Katherine Johnson is an American mathematician who helped to send astronauts to the moon by calculating the flight-paths of spacecraft while working for NASA. ... In 1952, she found out that she could work for NASA at the all-black West Area Computing section. The themes of Hidden Figures include racism, sexism, and the drive to achieve something. The book chronicles the lives of black women working at NASA as "human computers" who do difficult math by hand and in their heads. It takes place in the 1950s and 1960s.
