So I wrote a poem.. Am I floating?
Or drowning?
I feel myself drifting away
Flashbacks appear in my mind
I try to fight them away
Their grip is too tight
I lose myself again
As I remember the window
rain drops, dripping down
I stare out towards the trees
As you drove with anger
The tears I could not control
They moved so freely
At the hospital we arrived
You forced me inside
As your voice repeats in my head
As an endless cycle
I know I messed up
But nobody sees
I kept this wall
I stood up tall
Did you know I was breaking?
Falling apart?
I promise I am not faking
Please do not be mad
It just gets so hard
When everything is so dark

at the age of 4, she thought everything was better.

she was innocent, she was joyful, despite the predictions about the bad weather.

at the age of 10, she started to figure things out.

in life, in its meaning, she started to doubt.

at the age of 14, she was filled with depression, anxiety and fear,

that nobody cared about her, and death was drawing near.

at the age of 17, her sleeves got longer, her will got shorter, until she couldn't take it anymore.

she left this earth with a rope, chair and to the heavens she would soar.

the significance of the title, "the passing", is related to the fact that the main characters, who are three african-american descendant women, are passing as white. this means that, because of their light-coloured skins they look like white women. one of the three friends, clare, is married to a white man and she lives in a white community and she has never told her husband that she is black. the title can easily be connected to the idea of pretending to be someone you are not and of losing your real identity in order to be accepted by society.
