SUPERMAN:
Superman is a superhero created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. He first appeared in DC's Action Comics #1 in 1938. Due to his popularity, Superman was spun off into his own self-titled comic book in 1939 and is the second oldest comic book printed continuously. Superman is the best-selling American superhero comic book character of all time. He's had the most copies of a single comic ever sold, with 23 million copies of Superman #75 sold in November 1992. Superman was the first superhero that caught on with the American public and paved the way for every superhero after him.
Superman was born on the planet Krypton and was sent to Earth moments before the planet was destroyed. He was found and adopted by
Jonathan and Martha Kent, who named him Clark Kent. He started to develop superhuman powers at a young age, such as super strength and impervious skin that would let nothing pierce him. His heat and X-ray vision would come later in life. His foster parents convinced him to use his powers to benefit humanity, and he became a crime fighting vigilante. Superman uses his alter ego, Clark Kent, to help protect his privacy when not fighting crime.
Superman appeared in his first big budget self-titled movie in 1978. He has since appeared in seven other major films including Batman v Superman and Justice League. Superman movies and other movies featuring him have grossed over $3.1 billion worldwide. Superman has appeared in four live action television shows, the most notable being “Smallville.” Superman's box office success and long television show runs make him one of the most recognizable comic book characters of all time.
Superman sets the standard that all other superheroes are measured against. From super powers to ethical dilemmas, he has a strong moral code that does not allow him to kill. His status as an immigrant gives him a dual identity that is key to American culture. His dual identity allows him to assimilate as an individual while still expressing his heritage. Superman's comic book and movie success show that he has been a part of American culture since his inception.

SPIDERMAN:
Spider-Man is a superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He first appeared in the comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962. Due to his popularity, Spider-man was spun off into “The Amazing Spider Man” in 1963 and eventually became Marvel's top selling comic book. Spider-Man arose from an increased demand by teenagers for comic books. He was given a hyphen in his name so he would not to be too similar to Superman, both with the name styling and their costumes being blue and red.
Peter Parker was a science-whiz orphan living with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May before acquiring his powers. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, Peter Parker gains the agility and proportionate strength of a spider. Along with heightened athletic abilities, he gains the ability to stick to walls and ceilings. Peter Parker uses the alternate identity Spider-Man to shield his real identity. Starting out as a novelty television star, Peter becomes a crime fighter after ignoring a robber who eventually robs and kills his Uncle Ben.
Spider-Man appeared in his first big budget self-titled film in 2002. He has since appeared in 9 other films including Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Endgame. Recent Spider-Man movies and other movies that contain Spider-Man have grossed close to $12 billion worldwide. Spider-Man has also appeared in 10 animated television shows including the most recent Ultimate: Spider-Man. Spider-Man has also appeared in a Broadway musical titled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
Spider-Man has always been a Marvel comic book staple. He was one of the first Marvel superheroes to bring big budget film success that eventually lead to the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His naivety and sense of right and wrong help develop a young, innocent comic book hero into the one we know and love.
