Pets of Plastic 1 Today, we live in a world where people spend a considerable amount of their time glued to digital devices like smartphones. With advancements in technology, new devices are replacing traditional activities and hobbies. A new and fast growing trend among modern forms of entertainment is the rise of robotic pets. Robotic pets are replacing real, living pets, like cats and dogs, worldwide.
Japan and other Southeast Asian countries have pioneered the science behind robotic pets. A robotic pet is a machine made of metal and plastic and resembles a real, living pet but uses artificial intelligence (AI). AI is the ability of a computer program or device to think and behave intelligently.

Several studies have shown that pets help people feel calm and happy. Taking care of a pet is not time-consuming if the pet is robotic. Unlike real-life pets, robotic pets don't need constant attention, food, and care. They provide the company of a real pet without the added responsibilities.
Robotic pets were initially designed as interactive toys for children. Now, robotic pets are being widely used by not just kids, but even adults.
Many people suffer from allergies caused by pet hair. Robotic pets are a boon for people with allergies, as they allow them to enjoy the benefits of a pet without worrying about allergies.
However, robotic pets do have certain limitations. They can never replace the emotional benefits and joys of having a real pet. Robotic pet owners cannot reap the long-term benefits associated with having real pets.
Experts argue that prolonged companionship of a robotic pet can alter the social skills of humans and their ability to bond with others. They suggest that humans that own robotic pets may find it difficult to connect with real pets or even with people.
Even though robotic pet technology is becoming readily available and affordable, not everyone may know how to use these devices. Some people find it difficult to engage with and handle their robotic pets.
Once aware of both the positive and negative effects, people can decide whether a robotic pet is worth their time. At the end of the day, robotic pets have their own charm, but they cannot substitute real connections offered by living pets.
