He has a hunch back- shows he is deteriorating and cannot cope with the strain of work. Also shows lack of medical attention because of the colour of his skin.

The owner of the ranch employs him to do the jobs that are considered too in descent for a white man to complete. (remember this is in a time where there wasn't much equality between White Americans and African Americans at the time when John Steinbeck wrote the novella)
