In the beginning of the story of "True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle," Charlotte wants to be proper and civilized. At the age of 13, she has already begun to understand the notions of being proper, such as ladies wear gloves, they drink tea, and they read morally sound books (which are pretty boring). She basically soaked in all of the information given to her from her school for better girls.
