In naturally stressful situations, the time of greatest stress is not necessarily the time when danger is at its height. (2)This fact is illustrated by a research study of the pattern of stress on a group of twenty-eight parachutists. (3)Each man was asked to describe his feelings before, during, and after his jump. (4)All reported an increase of fear and of desire to escape as the time for the jump approached. (5)Once the men were in line and realized that they could not turn back, however, they began to calm down. (6)By the time they reached the most dangerous part of the jump—when they were in free fall and waiting for their chutes to open—they had calmed down.
