Responsibility can be defined as the ability to control and manage one's own life. Independence can be defined as the ability to take responsibility for one's life without unnecessary reliance on the help of others.

Therefore, you need both responsibility and independence to succeed in life, they are not exactly the same but similar enough to both be needed at the same time.
