The land surface (relief) of Ghana consists of highlands and lowlands.

Lowlands

Places ranging between 150 – 300 metres above sea level are referred to as lowlands and can be divided into two types, namely; the coastal lowlands and the interior lowlands.

The coastal lowlands as the name suggests, are found along the coast from Half Assini in the Western Region to Aflao in the Volta Region. These places usually lie 100 metres above sea level.

The interior lowlands mainly lie around the Volta basin and are about 150 metres above sea level.

Lowland relief features in Ghana include:

i. The Volta basin; thus all the lands drained by River Volta and its tributaries.

ii. River Valleys; all rivers in Ghana flow in valleys which are lowlands

iii. The coastal plains in South – Eastern Ghana including the Accra plains

Places ranging between 300-600 metres above sea level are classified as highlands in Ghana. Mount Afadjato which is the highest point in Ghana is 872 metres above sea level.

Akwapim - Togo range

Gambaga Scarp

Kwahu - Mampong-Koforidua Ridge

Bole - Wa Lawra hills

Zabzugu hills

From the above examples, it can be seen that highlands include mountains, ridges, plateau and hills.
