There are a few reasons why this is a sonnet. A sonnet is defined as having fourteen lines, uses any form of rhyme scheme and typically ten syllables per line. The above selection does have fourteen lines. By only allowing fourteen lines the sonnet is short but is able to still tell a story. The selection rhymes every other line. This rhyme pattern gives the sonnet a pattern and connects the lines together better. The use of ten syllables per line also adds to the overall rhythm.
