Claudius is an ambitious and self-centred character obsessed with power, so Hamlet’s figure is a threat to his throne. When Gertrude tells him about Hamlet’s wrong deeds, he claims he will protect his kingdom by having him exile. Far for seeking justice and achieve moral balance as he displays in front others, he is concerned about maintaining his political power so he will have Hamlet executed in England. Publicly he shows himself as a moral leader, punishing the man who committed murder, while internally it is quite the opposite, he is a cunning and a Machiavellian villain.
