b. establish the focus of the essay and the writer’s position.
c. take into consideration how the audience feels about the topic.
d. contain a citation to support the writer’s viewpoint.

An argumentative essay needs to establish a clear opinion of why you take either side, for example if you wanted to write an essay stating that cats made better pets than dogs, you need to clearly explain why.
