Ingrid Jonker's poem "The Child" is a strong sentimental poem about the racism, prejudice and injustice in South Africa and the hope for a better future. Angered and disturbed by the South African government's policy of Apartheid, Ingrid wrote "The Child" to address the issue of racial injustice against her people by the Whites.

The background of the poem is about the death of a small child in the Phillipi police station where his body had been kept. And the most profound thing was that he had been shot while he was in his mother's arms. The image of the dead child shouting 'Afrika' signifies the need to keep fighting. the strong sentiment of the people in opposing the Apartheid, the image of the young child dying while still shouting "Afrika" all shows the poet's opinion. And the tone of the whole poem is that of anger, rage against the oppressive government.
