(5) maybe this is part of what makes stonehenge so incredibly interesting. (6) this doorway to the past is a mystery, and it probably always will be.

(10) it stands on the salisbury plain. (11) this is a large meadow in the english county of wiltshire. (12) stonehenge may have been built as long ago as 3100 bce. (13) the date it was built is one of the mysteries surrounding stonehenge. (14) some of the stones date back to 2500, and 2000 bce. (15) that leads some people to think the monument was built over a period of perhaps 2,000 years. (16) this means stonehenge was probably built in stages. (17) experts have studied the monument for a long time, but no one understands how it was built.

(18) think about the impressive acts of construction involved in building this monument! (19) for one thing, some of the huge stones came from places very far away from the site. (22) how did the people of that time accomplish this task? (23) some scientists think the stones were brought by hand; they think people pulled the stones with ropes across the land or carried them by sea on boats. (24) others say that it is unlikely ancient boats could have stayed afloat under such a weight. (25) still others believe the stones were carried by large glaciers that moved across the ocean over the thousands of years following the last ice age.
