Beowulf and Grendel are a story written years ago. This story is about Beowulf, a human and a hero, who defeats Grendel, the giant or the monster. Actually, Beowulf and Grendel are separated stories. Beowulf is the first written before Grendel. Beowulf was written between 975-1025, while Grendel was written in AD 700 - 1000. Both of the stories were part of an Anglo-Saxon epic poem which was considered important to the Old English literature.

The story Beowulf focuses on how the character Beowulf, as a hero of the Geats, comes to help the king of the Danes, Hrothgar. The king of the Danes' great hall is plagued by Grendel who is considered as a monster or a giant. Thus, Beowulf comes to help to defeat Grendel. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands. Not only kills Grendel, but Beowulf also kills Grendel’s mother by a giant’s sword. After that, Beowulf becomes the king of the Geats.

On the other hand, Grendel is a story that puts more attention on the character Grendel. Grendel in the story of Beowulf is characterized as cruel, scary, and antagonist. Yet, in the story of Grendel, Grendel is characterized as the ‘protagonist’. His attack to King Hrothgar’s great hall is because he feels ‘harrowed’ by the sounds of singing from the King of the Danes’ hall. Sadly, people consider it as an attack from a cruel and bad monster.
