When he reads the letter from Nene telling him of his two grandsons and their desire to meet their grandfather, his objections to the marriage melt away. We have been prepared for this turn-around by Okeke’s earlier rejection of the herbalist as a cure and the fact that he is considered “obstinately ahead of his more superstitious neighbors.” When even Nature seems to “take a hand” in the struggle, he gives in and begins worrying that he’ll die before he can make it up to them.
