In "the pilgrimage" death is compared with a chair. what is the similarity?

In "The Pilgrimage," Herbert says "death is fair, and but a chair." He compares death to the chair as a means to convey a pilgramage to a better place. In an analysis of the poem, Bert Westerwheel says the chair serves as  a chariot to Heaven after death. Perhaps, death and the chair are similar because neither contain life.
