What is meant by providing a “hook” for your reader?

You want to make sure that your reader keeps reading. In order to do this, you want to include something that catches his or her attention; this is called a hook. Once the reader reads your hook they will be interested in finding out what happened. Think about a hook that you would use for fishing. It catches the fish and reels them in, just like the reader.
