Pastoral literature is a type of literature that discusses the "simple" lives of shepherds. These works tend to emphasize how these rural societies are free from the complexity and corruption of cities. They tend to idealize rural life by contrasting it to the materialism and consumerism they believe is dominant in urban places. Among the English poets that have written in this genre are Edmund Spenser, John Milton and Percy Bysshe Shelley.
