Indeed, Odysseus has been warned by the ghost of Tiresias that he should avoid the Island of Thrinacia that belongs to the God Helios and where sacred cows live peacefully. Odysseus tries to keep his men away from the island but tired of wandering the seas they insist and force the ship to land there. Odysseus then tries to warn them of not killing the cows for food and they comply for a while but when food becomes scarce they kill a few of them and eat them. Helios complaints about this to Zeus and the latter comes and uses lightning to destroy the ship and kill all the sailors except for Odysseus who never killed of ate one of the sacred cows.

This is a perfect example of short term benefits (satisfying the urge to be back on land and satisfying hunger) destroying long term benefits (staying alive).

i think the correct answer would be adjustments in life roles.  this causes for one to adjust or change totally his/her career or lifestyle since the present is not beneficial to the life role he is at. for instance, you became a mother you would of course stop going to malls and enjoying life outside. you would be staying at home taking care of your child.
