hamlet is overwhelmed after talking to the gravediggers (who are digging a grave for ophelia) and begins to question the purpose of life and the idea of death. he realizes that the one thing all men have in common is the fact that they are all going to die. hamlet concludes that all men, whether they are kings or beggars, eventually end up in the soil. this thought leaves a mark on him.
