The character of the Apothecary sells Romeo the fatal poison. When his servant Balthasar brings Romeo the "ill news" of Juliet's death, he asks him to hire some horses, since he wants to travel to Verona that same night. When Balthasar leaves, he starts entertaining destructive thoughts. "I do remember an apothecary," he says, and he describes his unkempt look and the inside of his bizarre pharmacy. He then recalls what he thought when he saw him: " [...] if a man did need a poison now [...] here lives a caitiff wretch would sell it him." He did not need the lethal poison back then, but he is determined to get it now in order to end with his life, and he is convinced that the pharmacist will sell it to him, even though he could be sentenced to death for doing that, since he surely needs the money. The pharmacist finally agrees, impelled not by his will, but by his poverty.
