Where are the speaker`s parents taking the family? exile

In "Exile," the speaker's parents are taking the family to the United States, although the speaker is not immediately aware of this. The family is escaping the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Many people left the country during that time, as the regime was extremely oppressive.
