These two passages demonstrate that Telemachus has grown up to help his father. Odysseus left when Telemachus was very small, and therefore, they have not had much time to be together and to get to know each other. Telemachus, however, has heard about his father and aspires to be like him. Telemachus is still young and naive when his father comes back, but we can see that very quickly, he grows up to resemble his father in strength and bravery.
