The answer to this would be Santiago.

In the book, Santiago seems to be depicted as a a person who lives alone in his shack which once contained a photograph of his deceased wife which he had to take down because it made him too lonely to see it. This gives the impression is that Santiago is an old, forgotten widower who barely manages a meager existence through the help of his only friend Manolin.

Also while finishing, Santiago wishes Manolin was still with him so that he could help him bring the fish in, and he goes as far as thinking that 'no one should be alone in their old age'.  Then, when the night falls, Santiago looks around and thinks of how alone he feels at that moment. When he sees the hurricane forming in the distance especially, Santiago experiences the vulnerability that comes with being alone, and wishes there were someone there with him to help.
