I believe that the prophecy is the event that changes Macbeth's character. I think this is supported by the fact that the prophecy is the first, and perhaps most important event of the play. When Macbeth hears it, he is immediately assaulted with considerations as to what this means. Moreover, when Macduff confesses the circumstances of his birth in Act V, Macbeth immediately loses much of his confidence and character due to the fear that the prophecy is not true. It is likely that Lady Macbeth pushed him towards a more violent path simply because she was also influenced by the power of the prophecy and the promise of power.
