What is the purpose of transitional words?

Transitional words can open up new ideas as a writer. This can help readers understand the topic and what you're talking about a little better. Because of Transitional words, it keeps the writer from jumping from on track to another (or one idea to another). It helps smooth out the story a little better. 
Example: 
Jane likes to have her steak cooked in the same way as her mom does.
Bad example:
I go to school, read, play, eat, sleep, go home.
