This novel incorporates Victorian ethics and its reverse side. Victorian society had praised decent, respectable life above everything else. However, this ethical ideal had a darker side to it, which was indulged in secrecy. For example, wealthy members of the upper class had numerous families, but there were more prostitutes and brothels than ever before in history.

Furthermore, Victorian society was thrilled about technological progress and industrialization, but it disregarded the slums where the majority of people had to live without ever getting a chance to enjoy the advantages of their own age. The very burden of industrialization was put on the most underprivileged part of society, the working class, women, and children.

So, Stevenson's novel explores the tension between what was above and under the surface. Just like the respectable Dr. Jekyll can't help but unleash his abominate alter-ego Mr. Hyde at night, so the Victorian life strived to maintain the illusion of cozy domesticity and moral decency, while it was secretly obsessed with debauchery. The parallel goes even further: they enjoyed the privileges of modern life, not even bothering to conceal the harsh capitalist exploitation of the lower classes which enabled the whole progress.
