mark twain satirizes the fact that how a 1,000,000 pound bank note is an instant tool for reputation and prestige for henry adams, an american who is left with no savings after an accident in his country swept him out to sea.

wherever he goes and the affairs he is involved in, henry adams uses the banknote as an endorsement in order to get loans from everybody. he is successful at doing this, therefore proving the theory of wealthy brother b, who is co-owner of the banknote along with brother a. brother b stated that henry should be able to use the banknote in a way that he would not need to actually cash out on the money.
