Brutus has had an ambiguous relationship with his patron and friend Caesar: he fears that Caesar is on the path of becoming a tyrant, and he loves him at the same time. He finds the strength to kill him, but then he suffers because of it.

Right before the assassination, Caesar held his speech about himself "as the northern star". That speech shows that he really believes to be above other people. So, the attempt on his life surprised him, and Brutus' leading role in it defeated him. Maybe he could have imagined a conspiracy; but that Brutus would have a role in it, it would be unbelievable for Caesar.
