It has to do with race relations to do with to the hospital ward that occurs earlier in the story. The "coal bin" is a metaphor for the fate that both of the boys will meet if they attempt to rob the bystander. "Teaming up" refers to them pushing aside their differences so they can die with their consciences clean.
