He asks Samuel about how he learned to read, and Samuel shares how his mother taught him, and that she herself was taught by the son of their landlord. This noble's son gave her the locket when she turned thirteen years old. He was sent away when their relationship was discovered.

When Samuel wonders how Capt. Smith can remain so calm in the face of his imprisonment and write, Smith tells him that he is imitating what Julius Caesar did when he was in prison.
