POEM FOR MY GRANDMOTHER When I heard you were sick
You became the little girl
You told me about,
The one who used to hide in the hay In the red and white barn
When it was time
For her to do the dishes.
And I became the little boy
You told those stories to,
And I hid with you in the hay,
Listening to your father’s voice
Calling through the rafters, calling for you When the summertime warmed the hay And the dishes were piling up.
