Read the passage about a track meet. Tessie crouched down in the starting position. When she heard the crack of the starter’s pistol, she lunged forward and began to run. Tessie’s best friends, Ava and Maria, were running beside her for a while, but Tessie soon pulled away. Tessie knew they wouldn’t mind because they didn’t care about track or winning as much as Tessie did. The runner she really had to worry about was a girl named Sonia on another team. Tessie felt her legs begin to ache, but she pushed her body forward, faster. Then Tessie couldn’t see anything anymore but the finish line. As she burst across the finish line, she heard her teammates let out a roar. She looked at the clock. Not only had she won the event, she had set a new school record! Which sentence BEST describes the character’s thoughts and feelings about the events in the passage? A. “When she heard the crack of the starter’s pistol, she lunged forward and began to run.” B. “Tessie’s best friends, Ava and Maria, were running beside her for a while, but Tessie soon pulled away.” C. “Tessie knew they wouldn’t mind because they didn’t care about track or winning as much as Tessie did.” D. “Then Tessie couldn’t see anything anymore but the finish line.”
