Many superstitions come from ancient beliefs.
We knock on wood for luck because long ago
some cultures believed that natural spirits
lived in trees. In addition to being valuable for
trading, salt was also thought to have magical
powers. So spilling it became unlucky-and
expensive. Not walking under a ladder comes
from the Egyptians. They thought the triangle
formed by a ladder leaning against a wall was
sacred. Walking under the ladder broke up
this triangle's special energy.
