Quote Response: What does the quote mean? Write about a situation in which you experienced “getting knocked down”, and how you “got back up”. What lessons were learned? How did it help you grow as a person?

In life I will always try to get back up. But the lesson may get me to change course. I think it's a mistake to continue doing the same thing hoping for a different result. So maybe you get up and change course.

I used to box some in Boy's Club, and later in college. I was never great, but I did have flashes of mediocrity. One day 5 of us gathered in a friend's basement and the host brought out some gloves and suggested we box some. He and I started sparing. He was inexperienced and I had no trouble. Finally he ran into a jab and his nose started bleeding so we quit. I felt bad hurting someone who had no chance and wished I had been more careful. Finally one of the people present, who I didn't know said maybe I'd like to spar with him. He was older, maybe 25 while we were in our late teens. He was also bigger than me. I later learned he was a light heavyweight pro. As I looked dubiously at him trying to think of a way out he said, "you're pretty good. We'll just spar a bit, no one will get hurt. You know friendly."

I agreed and we went at it. This went fine for a couple of minutes, but then I walked into a shot to the solar plexus. I don't even remember going down. The first thing I do remember was wondering if I was ever going to breath again. I made an effort to get up, but my hands gave out and I fell back down. Meanwhile my opponent came over saying how sorry he was for that accidental punch. Later, as I ruefully mulled it over I was pretty sure it was no accident. I also figured that I had gotten what I deserved. Like many unpleasant experiences, you can learn a lot from them.
