Surfing the Web is a different experience than reading a book, writing an essay, or concentrating on a problem for a long time. In my experience, I can spend hours searching for something online, while reading a book or writing an essay would require several breaks to keep me concentrated.

I think it´s likely due to how different these experiences are. The internet allows a more active role for the reader, because there´s so much information easily available, that we can find many sources on the same issue, and even look for words we don't know, or references that are not clear. Searching the web is like being a detective for a little while. On the other hand, reading a book is a more passive activity. One can only move through the pages as the writer intended, and that´s great, I love books!  However, it feels as it requires more of my concentration to be able to understand it, and some breaks to not get tired.
