Most of us have read Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid.  Once upon a time people believed (46) mermaids and mermen really existed.  These creatures were said (47) half human and half fish.  A mermaid was believed to have a head, arms and the top part of the body (48) a human being but instead of legs she had a fish tail covered with scales that ended in a tail fin.  A merman was the (49) version of a mermaid.  They were said to be very attractive to look at and human beings (50) fell in love with them.     In ancient times, people thought that these (51) water sprites always led men to destruction.  They sometimes disguised themselves (52) humans but they could be recognized by the damp patches on their clothes.  People also believed that when someone’s death was near mermaids could be (53) dancing on the surface of the water.
Sailors sometimes told tales of hearing strange singing while far (54) at sea and having seen these creatures sitting on rocks and washing (55) or just sunbathing.  Zoologists, however, are of the opinion that (56) creatures that the sailor saw and heard (57) really sea mammals.  Water creatures (58) as sea lions, manatees and dugongs may have helped (59) rise to the idea of semi-human sprites living in the sea.  These mammals make a strange (60) sound to call to each other and can often be seen sitting on rocks and beaches.  From afar they might have looked like semi-human creatures.
