S. should be raised because it will boost the economy and drastically reduce the number of people living in poverty. Increasing the amount of money employees’ have in their pockets will boost the economy because if consumer spending goes up, so will economic growth. According to The Institute for Policy Studies, each additional dollar a low-wage employee puts in their pockets adds around $1.21 to the economy overall (Roberts, Olinsky). This is important especially in times like these as the country heals from the economic issues the coronavirus pandemic has caused. If the economy is stimulated by the raising of the minimum wage, this can lead to taking many families out of poverty. Poverty is a large issue, even families that work full time are struggling with this. Former President Barack Obama says, “In the richest nation on earth, nobody who works full-time should have to live in poverty.” (Obama Administration).
