"If I lived in your time, I would have married her" this quote is from Kindred's story. Can I have an explanation about what does it mean?

I have not read Kindred's story but I can try and help ^^

the way I interpret the line "if I lived in your time, I would have married her", is that the speaker may have an unrequited love for the woman he is speaking about or they wish they were able to marry her. they may have an adoration of the woman and that is why they wished they could marry her ^^
