It was a typical windy, spring morning in Anchorage, Alaska, as my younger brother and I roamed through an open field, collecting wildflowers for Mother's Day. The wind whirled and billowed the tall weeds and grasses that surrounded us, and we listened to the whispering breeze going through the pine trees circling the meadow.

We planned a beautiful surprise for our mother that holiday by preparing a delicious breakfast menu full of her favorite treats. My brother, Toby, had the task of setting the table in the breakfast nook, and I admitted to myself that it looked fairly decent, given his lack of expertise doing household chores. He desperately wanted a centerpiece to complete his beautiful table setting so I assured him that I would take him on a quick walk to the meadow to collect wildflowers to assemble in a vase.

We scoured the field together, hunting for the prettiest wildflowers we could find. I discovered a lavender thistle bush and put it into my basket that was already brimming to capacity with an assortment of flowers. I accompanied Toby with my head down, rummaging the landscape when he abruptly halted ahead.

"What did you find, Toby?" I asked nervously. I hurried over to examine, but he took my arm and prevented me from approaching any closer.

"Do you see that?" he whispered.

My mouth dropped to the floor as my sweating hands released the flower basket. My body instantly froze because in the distance of the clearing, nearly fifty feet away, Toby and I caught a glimpse of a grizzly bear that appeared from the forest.

"What do we do?" Toby questioned in sheer panic. My mind churned in total chaos, but I tried to regain my thoughts, attempting to compose myself. Our father prepared us for grizzly bear encounters due to their local habitat; however, I was stunned and frozen in the moment.
