In the first fight scene (on page 54), Percy doesn't seem confident with his fighting abilities for these reasons:

He says "time slowed down" and "my legs tensed" indicating that he was nervous or scared. Also, this was a situation he was suddenly thrust into while trying to save his mom and his friend, so of course he'd be scared or unconfident.

In the fight scene on page 164, he seems more confident for these reasons:

- He reacts quickly when he sees the Furies (by grabbing the wheel of the bus)

- He hits the emergency brake (another quick reaction)

- He exposes himself to the furies after the bus stops, to help Annabeth and Grover. He wouldn't do this if he wasn't more confident in his fighting abilities.

- He uses his sword, Riptide, and successfuly stops one of the furies.

Now for the second question!

External conflict: The conflict between Percy and Hades is an excellent representation of External conflict. They both strongly believe two different things: Hades believes that Percy stole the Master Bolt, and his Helm of Darkness, while Percy thinks Hades stole it. Their different beliefs end up with Hades taking Percy's mother as leverage for his Helm of Darkness, as well as sending the furies after Percy, and Percy going on an entire quest on misleading information.

Internal Conflict: When Percy has to decide between saving Annabeth and Grover, or his mother , this is an example of internal conflict. Over their time together, Percy has grown close with Annabeth and Grover, but he still loves his mom, and with the magic pearls only three of them can escape. He ends up choosing Annabeth and Grover, promising to come back for his mother.
