In the beginning of the book, Percy has no idea who his father is or what kind of abilities he possesses. In turn, he views himself as a "bad kid, as one who gets into trouble all the time, Percy is more well-known for killing Medusa, which he accomplished with his shield instead of looking at  her directly. The similarities between Perseus aka- Percy cannot be underestimated. Percy slays Medusa, is devoted to his mother, and would even enter the Underworld to protect her.
