Two longtime college friends (Lisa and Riley) find themselves living in the same neighborhood. They both have medium sized gardens in their backyards and both decide to plant lettuce. When they started off, the seeds they planted were all of normal tasting lettuce. Every so often, a random mutation occurs in the lettuce plants affecting the allele that determines taste in the lettuce. The mutated allele is recessive and gives lettuce plants a bitter taste. There are rabbits that live in the area and enjoy eating normal tasting lettuce in people's gardens but dislike the bad tasting lettuce so much that they completely avoid it. Lisa has a swimming pool in her backyard so she decided to put up a privacy fence which encloses her garden and keeps rabbits out. For countless years, Lisa and Riley continue to grow lettuce in their gardens and each one always uses seeds produced from the previous year.
