Dee is a character in the short story "Everyday Use," and if you haven't read it yet, I recommend that you do so in order to gain a better understanding of culture and identity swap. Her name, Dee, represents a part of her ancestors' culture. She chose to change her name and culture so that no one would recognize her as an African American slave's child. It demonstrates to me that you live your entire life with your cultural identity; you can change your normal identity, but when it comes to your culture, things go downhill quickly. It's a lot more difficult to participate in various traditions and activities than it was when your parents did so. For example, instead of receiving multiple gifts from family members as is customary in your culture, you may only receive one present at Christmas. It's a lot more difficult if you go all out. After doing some more research, I discovered a story about a man who attempted to change culture by completely isolating himself, but was unable to do so. He changed his identity and everything else, but he was unable to change his culture. So, by this point, you're probably wondering what all of this has to do with Dee, and you're right. “Oh, that's not cultural identity, that's just her normal identity,” Dee says of her decision to change her name. You're mistaken. Dee's name is a symbol of her culture, so she is essentially changing her entire culture just by changing her name. Now, you might think she got off easy, and I agree, but it was a symbol of her ancestry and all of that stuff that was passed down, so I imagine it was difficult to get over. At the end of the day, everyone is a completely different person.
