One of the most prolific twentieth-century American Songwriters was Irving Berlin, born Israel
Baline, who lived to the amazing age of 101. Born in Russia in 1888 to an ashkenazi jewish family, he
and his family immigrated in 1893. Berlin's father, Misheh Baline, was a Cantor and also worked certifying
Kosher meat, but he died in 1896, and young Israel was forced to find work. He wrote his first song, "Marie
from sunny Italy," while working as a singing waiter in Pelham's Cafe in Chinatown. The misprinted sheet
music showed his name as "I Berlin." Irving Berlin went on to become a songwriter for Tin Pan alley and
Broadway. He wrote the music for Annie Get Your Gun (1946) and an all-soldier review called This is the
Army (1942). His most famous song is probably "White Christmas," introduced in the film Holiday Inn
(1942), with Bing Crosby singing Berlin's composition and later recording it for Decca Records
